5 Steps To Take Criticism

everyone_is_a_critic

No matter what your career path involves, criticism will always be a huge part of it. As a designer, every decision you make is questioned; everything from typeface to colors will be examined. How you react to these questions and critiques can determine so much more than you can imagine. Over the years, I found these steps help me deal with criticism best.

Shut Up

Whether you asked for it or not, whoever is critiquing your work is doing so for a reason. They obviously want to say what is on their mind, whether it be good or bad. Either way, nobody likes being interrupted and it makes you look like a jerk. Let them say what’s on their mind. You might actually benefit from it.

Interact

Don’t just let the words go in one ear and out the other. Really listen to what they’re saying and what they want to change or what want you to embrace. Don’t be stubborn. Show them that you’re listening. Ask Questions. Make sure everyone is on the same page and understands what everyone else is saying.

Step Back

Patience is a virtue. Now is a good time to have some. Sit back and take your time. Don’t make hasty decisions you might regret later. Clear your mind and relax. Criticism is part of life, so don’t take it personally.

Analyze

Be honest with yourself. Is the criticism true and fair? Do the critics have a point? Do they know something you don’t? These are all questions that you should ask yourself. Look at your target audience. How would they see it?

Be Thankful

Even if you don’t agree with what was said, be thankful. Your critic spent time to let you know how they felt. It would be rude if you didn’t thank them. Also, not thanking them can really hurt your reputation.

So there you have it. 5 steps that will get you through any sort of criticism. Feel free to share your ways of dealing with criticism in the comments.
