Let’s face it, some movies are crap. Between the overuse of Trajan Pro on movie posters and the predictable story lines, it’s hard to find a movie that’s worth the time you take to watch it. There are a few however, that every designer should see. I know, their documentaries, but not all documentaries are the same.
Helvetica
I don’t think I’ve ever met a designer who didn’t have something to say about Helvetica. Whether in favor or against, they all had something to say. How can you not!? Helvetica is one of the most widely used typefaces ever. This documentary does a spectacular job of showing both sides of the issue from both young and old designers. I love watching this movie while I’m designing.

Objectified
This movie is brilliant. It’s made by the same folks the made Helvetica. Instead of looking at a typeface, Objectified looks at the design of objects that surround us in our daily lives. Even if you’re not interested in product design, this movies helps point out how people feel about objects they interact with. Basically, how people react to design.

Art & Copy
I can’t wait till this movie comes out. The movie focuses on advertising and commercialism, the pros and cons of both and even features interviews with some of the leaders in the advertising world. It’s always good to look at things from a new perspective, Art & Copy will do just that.

Bonus - Lemonade
This movie focuses on the downside of design. What happens when designers lose their job? Not sure if this would classify as a must-see, but it definitely makes you wonder if you really enjoy being a designer. Hopefully the answer is yes. Hopefully Lemonade lives up to its expectations
